ABOUT THE BOOK

A South African nurse’s journey from apartheid-era Soweto to Australia, this memoir traces a life shaped by injustice, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to care.

Born into a loving and values-driven family in Soweto during the height of apartheid, Pumla’s early life is grounded in faith, community, and a deep sense of belonging—sheltered, for a time, from the harsh realities beyond her home. As political unrest intensifies, she is drawn into a world marked by inequality, violence, and resistance.

Through the loss of her father, the enduring strength of her mother, and her own calling into nursing, Pumla comes of age in a system that denies dignity to many. Working in under-resourced hospitals, she witnesses firsthand the human cost of apartheid—preventable suffering, ethical dilemmas, and the quiet courage of healthcare workers striving to make a difference. Her growing awareness leads her into activism, where she faces arrest, brutality, and the emotional toll of standing against a repressive regime.

Yet this is not only a story of survival—it is a story of purpose. Guided by cultural grounding, spirituality, and a deep belief in humanity, Pumla navigates grief, fear, and responsibility while finding her voice as both a nurse and an advocate. Her experiences shape a lifelong commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care and to challenging systems that fail the vulnerable.

Her journey continues in Australia, where she carries these lived experiences into a new healthcare context. Here, she reflects on identity, belonging, and the universal need for dignity in care, bridging two worlds through her practice and perspective.

Powerful and deeply human, this memoir reveals how compassion can endure even in the harshest systems—and how one woman’s voice continues to make a meaningful difference across continents.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am Pumla, a daughter shaped by the love, strength, and values of my parents, who taught me the importance of dignity, compassion, and standing for what is right. Growing up in Soweto during apartheid, I learned early that humanity can exist even in the harshest conditions, and that community, faith, and care for one another are powerful forces.

I am a mother and a grandmother, roles that have grounded me deeply in love, responsibility, and hope for future generations. My journey through life—both personal and professional—has been guided by a commitment to nurturing, protecting, and empowering others.

As a nurse, I have carried these values into my work, advocating for those who are often unheard and striving to provide care that is not only clinical but deeply human. My experiences across South Africa and Australia have strengthened my belief that every person deserves dignity, respect, and equitable care, regardless of their background.

At my core, I believe in humanity, in social justice, and in the responsibility we all share to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My story is one of resilience, compassion, and an enduring commitment to unity in diversity.
